The Handmaid's Tale boss explains real reason Serena didn't kill June: 'She's scheming'

[-WATCH UK TV LIVE-]

The recent episode of Hulu’s dystopian drama The Handmaid’s Tale came to a shocking end with two enemies joining forces, which was a twist viewers didn’t expect. Showrunner Bruce Miller lifted the lid on why Serena Joy (played by Yvonne Strahovski) didn’t pull the trigger and end her brutal feud with June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss).

Serena and June have been long-time enemies since the day June was placed in the Waterford residence to work as a Handmaid.

There she endured years of physical, sexual and emotional abuse under the watchful eye of Serena and her husband Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes).

However, in recent episodes, viewers noticed the tables began to seemingly turn after June was able to escape to Canada.

There she was able to kill Fred and threaten Serena who was released from custody and provided with a place to live in Canada.

However, her freedom didn’t come without terror as June ensured she lived in fear, despite her 24-hour security.

Serena was eventually rushed to the safety of Gilead sympathisers after June pulled the trigger outside the Gilead information centre where Serena was working.

As a result, she was forced to live with Alanis Wheeler (Genevive Angelson) and her husband Ryan Wheeler (Lucas Neff).

However, it became clear that Serena was beginning to be treated as a Handmaid after Alanis went from overbearingly nice to furiously sending her to her room.

He shared: “I think it is not impulsive, there's a point earlier in the episode where she decides that this is probably her best route out before she has the baby.

“So it's much more careful and thoughtful, just like she is — [she's] scheming, you know, and evil.

“But it's a scheme that she puts into play and works very, very carefully in order to get out of the hands of Ezra and the Wheelers.”

Bruce added to Entertainment Weekly: ”I think that in the moment, Serena definitely is tempted and definitely wants to kill her, but I think her plan is to somehow use this to get away from the Wheelers.”

While she pointed the gun at June, Serena demanded her ex-Handmaid kneel down and pray.

There June prayed for their children, that they didn’t have to live through the violence they had both endured.

As this brought Serena to tears, she may have realised June who had made multiple attempts to escape Gilead was her only chance of escaping the Wheelers.

Fans will have to stay tuned to see how this will play out for them and if Serena will switch gears and decide to bring down Gilead, the totalitarian society she help create.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 continues Wednesdays on Hulu in the US. The series will premiere in the UK on Amazon Prime Video and Channel 4 this month.
