The Handmaid's Tale season 5 theory: Rose to take down Nick after showrunner speaks out

[-WATCH UK TV LIVE-]

Hulu’s dystopian series The Handmaid’s Tale could meet a surprising twist with Nick Blaine’s (played by Max Minghella) death. After a major clue from showrunner Bruce Miller, Nick could meet his demise at the hands of his wife Rose Blaine (Carey Cox).

Season four revealed Nick was married during a long-awaited reunion with June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) when fans saw a glimpse of his wedding ring.

Nick and June had been lovers when she was captured and held hostage in Gilead as a Handmaid when he was employed as Fred Waterford’s (Joseph Fiennes) driver.

The two even shared a daughter, which came from Serena Joy’s (Yvonne Strahovski) longing to become a mother.

She forced Nick to attack June as she watched to ensure the Handmaid would become pregnant.

However, both Fred and Serena were unaware of June and Nick’s secret relationship, which they made sure to keep under wraps as they could be punished to death if caught.

Nick was also secretly working towards helping June escape Gilead and used his male privilege to connect her with an underground network of the resistance group.

Though viewers were overjoyed to see June gain freedom in Canada, many were sad to see her romance with Nick come to an end as she reunited with her husband, Luke Bankole (O T Fagbenle).

Thankfully for fans, season five introduced Nick’s wife as it explored more of their relationship.

“That's evolving, too. But I think what you'll see is, we tried to establish [Nick and Rose's] dynamic early on, which is it's a ‘don't ask, don't tell’ policy.

“And it's very much when she asks, ‘Where were you all night?’ she gets an honest answer, not an extensive one, but an honest one.”

Bruce added: “And what does that do to a person like Rose, who you're starting to get to know, who is maybe a little tougher than you thought, and why is she letting this happen?

“She seems very nice. Why is she letting him walk over her?”

“I think it's all weighed in on the fact that you're about to realise that there is another human being in the mix. And that person is Rose,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

Rose also seemed to know all about June and their history, and this was made evident during the premiere.

After Nick helped June seek revenge and kill Fred, Rose awaited his return home and hoped his death would help bring June peace.

Fans will have to stay tuned to see if Rose will have enough of Nick's admiration for June and eventually pull the trigger on her husband in a jealous rage.

The Handmaid’s Tale is available in the US on Hulu and will premiere on Prime Videos in the UK later this month.
