Jenna Ortega admits she snubbed Christina Ricci for Wednesday Addams advice

Christina Ricci brought the character of Wednesday Addams to life way back in the early ‘90s as part of the original Addams Family cast. Now, it’s Jenna Ortega who’s giving the character a new lease of life in Netflix’s Wednesday, although Ricci’s connection to the famous family still lives on as she took on the part of Marilyn Thornhill in the new drama. Therefore, fans would be forgiven for thinking Ortega had the perfect person working alongside her for advice on bringing Wednesday to the screen.

However, this proved not to be the case as Ortega had admitted that despite working closely with Ricci on Wednesday, she avoided any comparisons or advice from her co-star about the role.

Ortega made the revelation as she sat down with another of her colleagues, Emma Myers, for a discussion about the series for MTV News.

“I think when she was on set, neither one of us said Wednesday once to each other,” Ortega said of Ricci.

She explained why: “I don’t think she wanted to get in the way of my performance and feel like she was overbearing.

“And then I felt like I didn’t want to pull up something that she did 30 years ago, for one, the sake of my own benefit, but two, I didn’t want to rip her off.

“And I didn’t want to be too much like her,” Ortega added.

However, it wasn’t just for the fear of “ripping” Ricci off that Ortega cited as a reason for avoiding the subject with her co-star.

“Our show has superpowers and outcasts and evil ghost pilgrims,” she continued. “So they’re two very different people our Wednesdays, I think.”

Ortega, on the other hand, is currently 20 years of age, so from the off the differences between the two portrayals were clear.

Ricci has gone on to have a long and successful career in Hollywood, starring in big-screen blockbusters Casper, Buffalo 66 and Speed Racer among others.

Wednesday isn’t Ricci’s only big-name small-screen credit either, having enjoyed roles in Yellowjackets, Pan Am, Grey’s Anatomy and All McBeal as well.

Her return to the Addams Family universe has been widely applauded by fans but it was a decision the show’s bosses feared wouldn’t happen.

Showrunner Al Gough told TVLine he feared that Ricci’s commitment to Yellowjackets combined with the fact she was pregnant at the time of filming would make it impossible.

However, he revealed the crew “rejigged” the show’s filming schedule because Ricci “really wanted to do it”.

He added: “She worked with Tim [Burton] on Sleepy Hollow, and she loves Wednesday and really loved the idea of the project. It was really important to us that we honour the legacy of what’s happened before.”

Wednesday is available to stream on Netflix now.
