EastEnders fans were left devastated tonight as Whitney was given some heartbreaking news about her baby.

The BBC soap aired some emotional scenes tonight, as a worried Whitney headed to hospital to get checked out after experiencing some spotting. As Kat offered to go with her, Whitney was clearly concerned what it might mean.

After undergoing a series of tests, Dr Lane called Whitney in for a conversation and admitted there was an issue with the ultrasound and the doctor had concerns about the health of the baby going forward. A terrified Whitney sat quietly as Dr Lane revealed that there was an issue with the baby and admitted they had real concerns about the little one.

It was then that Dr Lane confirmed that Whitney's baby had a condition called omphalocele, which meant that some of the baby’s organs were growing outside its body. Whitney was beside herself as Dr Lane revealed to the mum-to-be that it was possible that the baby may not survive if it is showed to have the genetic link.

Fans tuning into the BBC soap were left devastated for Whitney amid her baby's diagnosis.

"absolutely nobody deserves what whitney is going through and will go through.. #Eastenders," [sic] one wrote, as a second added: "Poor Whitney can never catch a break, can she? #EastEnders."

A third shared: "What got me about that scene was Whitney saying sorry, like being upset was something she needed to apologise for," as a fourth penned: "They really do put Whitney through the wringer don’t they. Poor girl can’t catch a break #EastEnders."

It comes after it was confirmed EastEnders is working alongside SOFT UK and Antenatal Results and Choices on a new storyline, which will see Whitney Dean and Zack Hudson's baby diagnosed with Edwards' Syndrome.

Edwards' Syndrome is a rare genetic condition where a person has extra copies of a chromosome. There is no current long-treatment for the severe condition and children diagnosed with it do not often live beyond the first few years of their life.

Chris Clenshaw, Executive Producer of the BBC soap, had previously said of the storyline: "It was imperative for us to work alongside Antenatal Results and Choices and SOFT UK to accurately present, and sensitively portray, such an emotional storyline that many parents may relate to. Shona [McGarty] and James’ [Farrar] performances have thoughtfully portrayed the realities of the diagnosis and the decision making process with compassion and understanding.

"We hope that this story resonates with the audience, and that we represent it as sensitively, and as accurately as possible."
