Top Gear has reportedly been hit by delays while host Freddie Flintoff recovers from his horrific car crash.

It was reported in December that the 45-year-old host was involved in an accident while on the set of the BBC show.

The star was said to be “lucky to be alive” after the accident left him hospitalised and suffering from broken bones.

And now, it is understood that the show's producers have contacted contributors to let them know that they don't know when filming will start again.

Despite the injuries, sources explained he was 'determined to resume his TV work at some point.'

The BBC have emailed contributors and said they hoped to begin filming this month.

"However, we have now pushed filming back," the message reportedly read. "We don’t have a date in mind at the moment."

The source said his health has been a 'priority' but they thought he would have been in top health at this point.

"The show’s already been delayed once so for plans to slip again is a major headache in terms of scheduling and keeping contributors happy," they added to The Sun.

The Mirror have contacted BBC for comment.

An insider recently claimed production staff wanted to give Freddie time to recover from the crash as the accident was a "shock for everyone involved and very serious".

The show said they were fully investigating the incident as a spokesman for the programme said in December: "Our primary concern is and has been for the welfare of Freddie – as well as the Top Gear team.

"All health and safety procedures were followed on site and the incident is now being fully investigated, in line with standard policy and practice."

Freddie, who presents Top Gear alongside Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris, took a break from TV following the frightening incident.

His family were understood to have asked him to stay away from the TV while he recovered.

It was also claimed Freddie was even considering quitting the show completely after the accident.
