Emmerdale viewers were heartbroken for Paddy Kirk during Friday's difficult episode of the ITV soap.
The much-loved character had decided to end his life after battling depression, after having a rough time over the past few months.
Following the breakdown of his marriage to Chas, and feeling more and more isolated, Paddy has struggled with his mental health.
He recently fled the village without telling anyone, prompting concern from his loved ones as they tried to find him.
It was revealed on Thursday night that Paddy was having suicidal thoughts, and that he had planned to take his own life before his return.
Paddy only came back to the village to see how they had coped with him being gone, and to say his final goodbyes to his family including young daughter Eve.
Believing everyone was better off without him, Paddy made the devastating decision to take his own life and left a note revealing this to his dad, Bear.
Friday's episode saw his loved ones continuing their search for the character, leading to heart-wrenching scenes between Paddy and his best friend Marlon Dingle.
Marlon begged Paddy to not go through with his plan and to return to the village with him, as he shared his horror at learning his best pal didn't want to live anymore.
Paddy admitted he couldn't see a way through and suggested it was for the best, but eventually Marlon managed to talk him around and he and Chas took him home.
Paddy soon sobbed into the arms of his dad, before doctor Liam Cavanagh paid him a visit to find out more about Paddy's struggles.
Liam vowed to help the village vet, but Paddy confessed to Marlon that he felt "locked out" and no one could get in.
Marlon pleaded with Paddy to live and to find reasons to live every day, as he hoped his friend would get the help he needed for his depression and his suicidal thoughts.
Paddy told him he was "here now" and that he would try, but he couldn't promise anything.
The devastating scenes and Paddy's struggles left viewers devastated, with many sobbing over the difficult episode.
Taking to Twitter, fans praised the cast members involved in the episode and praised the soap for tackling the storyline.
One viewer said: "This Paddy and Marlon scene is so powerful. Give @dominicbrunt and @markcharnock all the awards."
Another tweeted: "That’s it…I’m sobbing @dominicbrunt & @markcharnock deserve every award going for that scene."
A third added: "what a brilliant heartbreaking scene with Paddy & Marlon," as a fourth viewer said: "So so sad … I’m crying."
