Fans of The View were left stunned after a bitter interaction between two of the hit show's hosts.

Sunny Hostin, 54, was left furious after being rudely interrupted by co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin, 33, on Thursday's edition of the daytime show.

In the tense debate, the duo were discussing the meaning behind being "woke".

It had came about after Sunny had slammed comedian Bill Maher's recent views on the term, leading her to tell him he should be "ashamed" of himself.

She angrily told her panellists: "The term woke is about being aware of social inequity and injustice. Bill Maher is comparing woke with identity politics.

"He has called college campuses too woke because they are talking about diversity and social justice and inclusion."

But she was left less than impressed as Alyssa interrupted to ask: "Why shouldn't diversity of opinion be a part of wokeness?"

Sunny quickly fumed back: "That is not - that is not what it meant."

She was backed up by fellow host Whoopi Goldberg who added her opinion on the matter before Sunny added: "That was a co-opting of the term.

"That’s to take the power away from Black people for standing up for what we deserve from this country."

Alyssa fuelled the fire some more when she again asked about the "diversity of thought" and why it wouldn't be included if the intention was to "reach as much diversity, inclusion and equity" as possible.

But Sunny wasn't prepared to back down and shot back: "Diversity of thought is not the equivalent of being woke. 'Woke' is not a political term.

"Woke' is a term about racism, about social injustice, about equality.

"It doesn’t mean you like [Donald] Trump or you don't, it doesn't mean you’re MAGA or you're not. It doesn’t mean you’re Republican or you're not."

The latest outburst comes a month after Whoopi took aim at the show's fans for "taking away" the "fun and jokes".

Her criticism came after viewers hit out at her co-host Joy Behar for jokingly claiming the pair weren't friends.

Whoopi, 67, said viewers were getting used to taking jokes "too far" and said people are now "making it hard to have fun" on the daytime chat show.
