Gareth Bale move set to leave Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney disappointed

His long-time agent Jonathan Barnett has already poured cold water on the proposed move, saying earlier this month: “I can say there will be no move to Wrexham. Gareth doesn’t want to play football anymore.”

It means that Wrexham's hopes of landing the 114-cap Wales hero are all but over. They had ambitions of bringing Bale - who once held the world record for a transfer fee after Real Madrid spent £85million to sign him from Spurs in 2013 - back to his native land after snagging Ben Foster on a short-term deal.

Bale would have represented a huge capture for the club, given that he won La Liga three times in Spain in addition to five Champions League titles, but Wrexham's hopes of him repeating similar heroics in their red shirt appear to finally be over.

However, it is only the start of their journey as far as Reynolds and McElhenney are concerned, with a sizeable investment in transfers expected this summer.
