Vera's first look images tease return of fan-favourite as Brenda Blethyn praises 'delight'

Having confirmed the hugely popular detective drama Vera will return for a 13th season ITV released the first images from the new season.

Acclaimed actress Brenda Blethyn, who plays the titular character is delighted to return to the role.

"Stepping back into Vera's shoes for the thirteenth series feels like coming home again,” she said.

“The support from the locals in the North East is truly heart-warming and reuniting with the talented David Leon and the rest of our exceptional team is an absolute delight.”

David rejoins the show almost a decade since he last appeared as DS Joe Ashworth.

The newly released images taken on set during their first day of filming on location in Haydon Bridge show him and Brenda in character in a formal shot.

There is also a more relaxed behind-the-scenes photo where the two of them are laughing at something while a camera waits to capture a scene.

David originally appeared in the first four seasons of the crime drama between 2011 and 2014 and is delighted to be back.

"I’m thrilled to be returning to Vera. It's fantastic to be back in the North East and reunited with Brenda and the crew for the new series,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to exploring the relationship between Joe and Vera as they make up for lost time.”

While David is returning to the cast some other familiar faces have bid farewell to the long-running drama.

Actor Kenny Doughty, who played DS Aidan Healey since 2015 actress Ibinabo Jack, who has played DC Jacqueline ‘Jac’ Williams since 2018, will not be returning for the thirteenth series.
They have filmed their last scenes and their final episode will be The Rising Tide, a feature-length episode based on the eleventh Vera novel.

The episode is actually the final part of season twelve and will be scheduled on ITV1 later this year ahead of the new thirteenth series.

There will be three feature length episodes in the series thirteen in total.

Joining Brenda and David in the cast are Jon Morrison as DC Kenny Lockhart, Riley Jones as DC Mark Edwards, Sarah Kameela Impey as Pathologist Dr. Paula Bennett and Rhiannon Clements as new and ambitious DC Steph Duncan.

ITV have revealed that the first episode will be titled Fast Love and it sees Vera dealing with Joe’s return when a young man is found dead following a collision with a car in a quiet country lane.

When she discovers that the victim is a popular market trader, she heads to his pitch to begin her investigation.

There she learns that this cheeky chappy was a complex character who was antagonistic, arrogant and able to get what he wanted.

There is currently no release date for series 13 but filing is due to take place until the autumn, which indicates that the new episodes will air at the end of this year or early next year.
