Elton John wades into Phillip Schofield row claiming furore is 'totally homophobic'

Elton John has stated that he believes that ongoing coverage of the Phillip Schofield scandal is “totally homophobic”.

In a new interview, the 76-year-old had his say on former This Morning presenter, Phillip, his departure from ITV, and his recent affair admission.

The conversation moved to the 61-year-old when Elton was questioned about how gay rights have progressed.

The singer told Radio Times: “There’s a law now that, if you visit a doctor in Florida, they can refuse to treat you if you’re gay, which I find just unbelievable.”

Elton continued to say that in America there was a “growing swell of anger and homophobia” and believed that Britain’s treatment of Phillip was “homophobic”.

The Rocketman singer stated: “I feel that the Phillip Schofield thing has been totally homophobic.

“If it was a straight guy in a fling with a young woman, it wouldn’t even make the papers.”

The comments made by Elton come after Phillip stepped down from hosting This Morning last month.

At the time he said: “I have agreed to step down from This Morning with immediate effect, in the hope that the show can move forward to a bright future.”

However, following his departure, the 61-year-old admitted that he had been having an affair with a younger man while on set.

He told the Daily Mail: "I did have a consensual on-off relationship with a younger male colleague at This Morning.”

Phillip stated that he “met the man when he was a teenager” but it was only after he started working on the ITV show “that it became more than just a friendship”.

The former daytime TV host acknowledged that the “relationship was unwise, but not illegal” and that the affair was “now over”.

Following the admittance, Phillip sat down with BBC's Amol Rajan to discuss that he felt “vulnerable” and said that he had “lost everything”.

The ex-ITV presenter also insisted that This Morning’s Holly Willoughby, 42, “did not know” about the affair.

Last month, Holly took to Instagram to say that she was very “hurt” to find out her former co-host had lied to her.

She said: “It’s taken time to process yesterday’s news. When reports of this relationship first surfaced, I asked Phil directly if this was true and was told it was not.

“It’s been very hurtful to now find out that this was a lie.”
