Man Utd have wasted at least £127m on Harry Maguire as Erik ten Hag transfer lists captain

Manchester United’s total amount spent on Harry Maguire has come to light as the Red Devils captain is likely to leave Old Trafford this summer after failing to earn the trust of Erik ten Hag. The England defender has fallen down the pecking order behind Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martnez, Victor Lindelof and even Luke Shaw in a dramatic fall from grace after his big-money arrival four years ago.

Maguire moved to United from Leicester in 2019 for £78.3million, which made him the world’s most expensive defender after eclipsing the fee paid by Liverpool for Virgil van Dijk. He penned a six-year contract after two impressive seasons with the Foxes, but while he remains the most expensive defender in football history - it is difficult to suggest that he has been worth the outlay.

The 30-year-old had been a dependable performer under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, so much so that he was named club captain, but despite starting the season as first choice under Ten Hag he has continued to drift further away from the starting lineup.

Now he is set to leave the club with his international career potentially on the line, though is struggling to find a suitor willing to continue his £190,000-a-week wages.

Maguire has two years left on his United contract but with the club looking to revamp the squad, they have decided they would be prepared to pay £10m this summer to Maguire to offset his loss of wages.

The Daily Mail claim that Maguire would only earn £95,000-a-week at his next club, as United will foot the bill to make up the difference. While he is not being forced to leave United as a valuable member of the dressing room, a warning from Gareth Southgate that his situation cannot carry on in its current form may persuade him to leave - especially if his wages are intact.

In addition to a transfer fee of £78.3m and a £10m pay-off, United have forked out nearly £40m in terms of wages to Maguire.

Four seasons of £190,000-a-week add up to £39.5m - the total of the three components reaches an eyewatering £127.8m without factoring in any bonuses in Maguire’s contract for trophies and achievements during his time at the club.

Maguire’s final game for United could be against Manchester City in the FA Cup final if he is able to make an appearance, but a valuable contribution against their rivals in order to stop Pep Guardiola’s outfit from matching their 1999 treble feat would go some way to helping repay the £127.8m outlay that the club has spent on Maguire in four years.
