Chelsea can infuriate Man Utd fans with key signing after contract decision made

David de Gea announced his United departure as a free agent on Saturday, ending 12 years as No 1 at Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old reportedly held negotiations over several months but ultimately wasn't formally offered a contract extension before his June 30 expiry.

He has become the latest victim of Erik ten Hag's brutal decision-making at Old Trafford after his treatment of prominent duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire.

United are expected to complete the signing of Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana as De Gea's replacement next week.

And Chelsea dropping out of the race to sign the 27-year-old earlier this summer sparked bemusement among fans, given Pochettino's underwhelming options.

Edouard Mendy has left Chelsea, joining Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli as part of a wave of high-profile stars heading to the Middle Eastern state.

It leaves Kepa Arrizabalaga as Pochettino's No 1, with Marcus Bettinelli and Gabriel Slonina as backup options.

But Kepa has struggled to impress since Chelsea made him the world's most expensive goalkeeper in a £72million deal in 2018.

And given Inter's open stance to letting Onana leave, missing out on his signature to United has left plenty frustrated.

But given De Gea's new availability on a free transfer, Pochettino could look to tempt him to remain in the Premier League.

Todd Boehly has handed out an array of lucrative contracts since becoming the club's owner and would likely be able to meet the Spaniard's demands.

Luring him to Stamford Bridge over a return to Spain or a Saudi switch would prove bitter for the United fans who have loudly heralded snatching Mount from under Chelsea's noses.

And there may be a part of De Gea keen to show Ten Hag and United that they made a mistake allowing him to walk out the exit door so freely.
