Chelsea 'start negotiations for £65m deal' despite Mauricio Pochettino not being fussed

Chelsea are set to begin negotiations with Porto in the near future over a potential move for goalkeeper Diogo Costa, according to reports in Portugal. The Blues have been heavily active in the market since the end of last season, with several new signings having been made in recent weeks alongside a larger number of player sales.

Edouard Mendy is one of those to have left Stamford Bridge this summer, with his exit leading to speculation that Chelsea could be looking to land a new goalkeeper in advance of the new campaign. Costa has been linked with a move to the Premier League for quite some time and has reportedly emerged as a target for the Blues hierarchy, who are planning to kickstart talks with Porto as a matter of priority, according to Jornal de Noticias.

It is said that Chelsea have their 'coffers full' to invest in the signing of a first-choice goalkeeper after raising over £134million in player sales over the last few weeks. They are preparing to open negotiations regarding a move for Costa in the 'first days of July', with Porto only willing to sell for the full value of his £64.4m release clause as things stand.

However, it seems as though the wishes of Chelsea's recruitment team may be at odds with those of Mauricio Pochettino, who officially began his tenure as the club's new permanent manager on Saturday. The Argentine is willing to give Kepa Arrizabalaga the opportunity to establish himself as Chelsea's first-choice stopper, according to the Evening Standard, which suggests that a move for Costa might not be too high up on his list of summer priorities.

It is claimed that Pochettino would rather find an established second-choice goalkeeper to push Kepa and feature in domestic cup competitions. Costa, meanwhile, would almost certainly be looking to play in the Premier League on a weekly basis as well as the Champions League if he ends up joining the Blues this summer.

A successful move for Costa could emerge as a major coup for Chelsea, though, with the 23-year-old having turned plenty of heads with his impressive showings at Porto in recent years. He managed to keep 20 clean sheets for the Primeira Liga giants in all competitions last season and was recently thought to be interesting Manchester United, although the Red Devils appear to be chasing the signature of Inter Milan stopper Andre Onana at present.

United defender Diogo Dalot has already waxed lyrical about Costa's qualities, insisting back in May that his international team-mate has the potential to become a world-class goalkeeper if he maintains his current rate of development. He told Portuguese media: "I grew up with him, he’s my friend, there’s a great relationship between us.

"I know perfectly well that he has the capacity to one day be a world reference. I don’t know if he’ll be at Manchester United or another big club in Europe, he shows at FC Porto that he is a differential goalkeeper and has helped the club a lot. If he continues there, I’ll be extremely happy. If he leaves, I hope he has the greatest success in the world."
