Former United star Rio Ferdinand has slammed the club’s treatment of David De Gea, with the 32-year-old looking increasingly set to become a free agent.
“Put aside whether you think David de Gea is good enough, he’s been an unreal servant to the football club,” he stated on his YouTube channel.
“Twelve years I think he’s had at the club, been player of the year four or five times and been the best player in a few of those years.
“He had moments where it didn’t go well but in the main he served the club remarkably well.
“There’s a lot of people calling for him to leave, some will say he should stay, there’s a new style of goalkeeper that they want, that’s understandable.
“Erik ten Hag has a type of goalkeeper that he wants and if De Gea isn’t that goalkeeper then he has to hold his hands up and say ‘you know what, I love it here, I’ve had a great run here but if the manager doesn’t want me then I have to go, or be No 2’, whatever.
“I’m just a little bit gutted with the way that the club have handled the David de Gea situation. I think it comes down to communication.”
