Outlander's Caitriona Balfe opens up on co-star's 'really sad final goodbye'

Outlander's Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) said goodbye to their daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and her family in episode two of the new series.

Brianna (Sophie Skelton), Roger (Richard Rankin) and their two children return to the future to try and save newborn Mandy, who has a heart condition.

Reflecting on the emotional goodbye, Caitriona shared: "I think that the joy and the absolute thrill of Brianna having a new kid, and everyone being able to be present there for that new life coming into the family, that was such a high.

“And then for the fear and the worry to come in when they realise that there’s actually something wrong with Mandy, and the implications of that and what that means.

"There really was only one solution, and that was for them to go back to save her."

Caitriona added to Variety: “But it’s a death. It’s like they know that this is the final goodbye, or they think it’s the final goodbye.

“Saying goodbye in that way, I think this is where we start to see Jamie and Claire be so vulnerable."

The Claire Fraser star explained the "goodbye was really sad" as it meant she and Sam weren't working alongside Richard and Sophie "for ages".

Claire noticed their newborn had a potentially fatal heart issue.

With Amanda’s future being uncertain, Brianna realised she had to travel to the future in seek of modern medicine, but the family run the risk of never seeing Claire or Jamie again.

As the MacKenzies head to the 1980s, Claire and Jamie attempted to settle into their new normal without them.

However, tragedy struck once again when a fellow time traveller broke into Claire’s surgery to steal a gemstone so he can go back home.

As Wendigo Donner and his crew frantically searched for more gems they knocked ether all over the floor and with an unfortunate strike of the match, Fraser’s Ridge went up in flames.

It wasn't the only big revelation as fans learned Allan Christie (Alexander Vlahos) was the one who killed his sister Malva (Jessica Reynolds).

Despite Claire's (Caitriona Balfe) attempts to stop Allan, who was overcome with grief, from taking his own life, Young Ian (John Bell) appeared and shot him with an arrow.

Young Ian exclaimed Allan’s previous actions killed an unborn child and for that, he must pay.

Outlander season 7 continues on Lionsgate+ in the UK and Starz in the US.
