Ben Foster shares Danny Rose claim about Daniel Levy and how Tottenham players were paid

Ben Foster has opened up on Danny Rose's claim about a bonus system put in place during his time at Tottenham by chairman Daniel Levy.

Former England left-back Rose spent 14 years at Spurs before leaving two years ago and when speaking about contracts and player bonuses in an episode of Fozcast - The Ben Foster Podcast, released on Spotify last month but seemingly recorded a couple of months ago, the former Manchester United, Watford and most recently Wrexham goalkeeper remembered what his former Hornets and England colleague had told him once about the bonus system at Tottenham.

"One of the lads, Danny Rose, was at Tottenham and Daniel Levy is so famously known for being tight and being an absolute businessman, brutal, ruthless businessman. Apparently their bonus schedule, their bonus payments were almost impossible to achieve, almost impossible," claimed the goalkeeper.

"To actually get paid a bonus, you would only get it for beating one of the big boys, one of the top six teams. So you're talking a Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, and apparently, I swear on my life, this is what he said to me, you've got to beat them by two clear goals as well. [1-0] it's not enough mate, you ain't getting that bonus. Winning games, they expect you to win games as Tottenham manager, at Tottenham apparently.

"To get the bonus you have to obliterate your opponent. You have to beat Man City 2-0, 3-0 to get that bonus payment which is bonkers. I was saying 'Rosey, there's no chance, that's impossible'.

"He was just saying 'I know Fozzy, I know'. He said there was one time they were winning 2-0 and in the last minute they conceded a goal and everyone was looking at each thinking 'OK come on lads we've missed out on the bonus', and they've still won the big game."

Foster also gave his thoughts on the plight of Spurs last season at a time which appeared to be just after Antonio Conte's explosive press conference shortly before he left the club and before the club appointed Ange Postecoglou ahead of this campaign.

"In their last 15-20 years [they haven't won much] for sure, but the problem is that Tottenham have got to a stage where they've got everything else covered off now. The training ground is world class, the stadium, they've got the infrastructure now so Tottenham fans are now thinking 'there's nothing else we can improve on other than the results on the pitch'," said the former England stopper.

"They've had some big boys [managers]. It's not the missing link, it's the theme. It's what people say and why Antonio Conte probably went off on one. It's about the ownership model and the way that it's run. 'We run it as a business, we make money year on year so let's just keep going the way we're going' instead of thinking 'no we want to win things, we want to be ruthless and set an ethos within this football club that we win things' and it's as simple as that."
