Martin Odegaard and James Maddison ranked by former England boss ahead of North London Derby

Former England boss Sam Allardyce has ranked Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard above Tottenham Hotspur summer signing James Maddison. The two sides are set to do battle at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the first North London Derby of the season.

Both teams have started the 2023/24 Premier League campaign extremely well, accumulating 13 points from their opening five league outings. Ahead of tomorrow's highly-anticipated fixture, experienced coach Allardyce has compiled a combined starting line-up, picking Odegaard above Maddison in the process.

When asked which midfielder better, Allardyce told No Tippy Tappy Football : "Odegaard. Hands down Odegaard.

"Mightily impressive last season." Both players have enjoyed a solid start to the season, with Odegaard netting three goals across all competitions whilst Maddison has scored twice and provided a further two assists.

Allardyce isn't the only person to rate the Gunners skipper above Spurs' playmaker in recent times, with Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne agreeing with ex-Everton manager. When asked to rank Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes, Odegaard and Maddison, De Bruyne put the Portugal international first, with Odegaard second and Maddison third.

"I think he's a creative machine, just in general," De Bruyne told Sky Sports when discussing Fernandes. "I think Odegaard is very creative but he's a little more controlled, Maddison is really creative, but I need to see more of him in a big team, so that can change.

"That's why I put him number three."
