Arsenal and Chelsea handed Kylian Mbappe transfer lifeline as Man United offer revealed

Arsenal and Chelsea have been handed a lifeline in the race to sign PSG and France star Kylian Mbappe in the coming months as Manchester United saw their chances given a devastating blow. It comes as the forward continues to be linked with a switch, now entering the final year of his contract with Les Parisiens.

As has been the case for a few summers now, Mbappe was wrapped up in transfer drama involving that contract and a possible exit. It was revealed that the 24-year-old had not triggered the option to extend his deal by an extra year - which would take it to 2025 - and could leave the following summer on a free.

The hierarchy in the French capital took drastic measures, which included excluding Mbappe from the team that took their pre-season tour to Japan. A few weeks later and the forward was suddenly back in the first-team mix again, though a new extension had yet to be signed.

It leaves plenty of teams hopeful of making a move over the next few months, with teams outside of France able to offer and sign a pre-contract in January. Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Manchester United had been just a few clubs linked with such a proposal.

The Gunners may be one of the best placed in the Premier League to make such a move, having previously been claimed to be a preferred destination in England. Mikel Arteta has his side pushing towards the top in all competitions, though the financial might of any offer could prove to be too much.

Free-spending Chelsea may be able to leverage such a deal though, with the ownership proving their commitment with £1billion worth of transfers already as well as a keen eye to bringing superstars to the club. Whether their recent struggles would factor into any decision is a question to be considered though.

But both teams have been handed a potential lifeline when it comes to the Mbappe saga as the Sun reports that Manchester United had planned to make their move had Sheikh Jassim's bid for the club succeeded. The Qatari politician was claimed to be a fan of the side and made several offers to takeover.

It wasn't to be for him though as the Glazer family rejected them and eventually caused for the bidding team to withdraw from the sale process. Whether Sheikh Jassim's move would've worked or not remains to be seen, with plenty of questions surrounding the funding behind such a bid and the possible implications of sportswashing.

Now that offer is off the table, the only thoughts can reflect on what could've been and in this case, reports claimed a move for Mbappe was one thing the team have missed out on with their decision. When being sceptical, it's unknown how plausible this would've truly been.

For those not of the Manchester United fandom though, there will be plenty of hope that the race to sign Mbappe is still open for anyone to win.
