Belgium vs Sweden abandoned after shooting as Tottenham star among players locked inside stadium

The European Championship qualifier between Belgium and Sweden in Brussels has been abandoned. Belgian authorities confirmed on Monday evening that two Swedish people were shot dead in the capital.

Tottenham star Dejan Kulusevski started the match for Sweden while Romelu Lukaku started for Belgium. The first half of the game was played with Viktor Gyokeres opening the scoring for Sweden before the on loan Chelsea star converted a penalty to make it 1-1.

The game was then abandoned around 30 minutes after the half-time whistle. Reports have suggested players from both teams decided during the break that the game should not continue.

An official statement from the Swedish FA on X reads: "Message to Swedish supporters on site in Brussels: The Belgian police want Swedish supporters to stay in the arena for security reasons. Take part in information from officials, authorities and SvFF :s staff on site.

"We will return when the Belgian authorities provide us with new information. Keep calm and take care of each other. Our thoughts go out to all the relatives of those affected in Brussels."

UEFA posted on X: "Following a suspected terrorist attack in Brussels this evening, it has been decided, after consultation with the two teams and the local police authorities, that the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying match between Belgium and Sweden is abandoned. Further communication will be made in due course."

Fans were initially asked to stay inside the stadium for their own safety - with the gunman still at large - but the emergency services are now trying to escort them home.

Belgium’s Prime Minister Alexander De Croo suggested the attack was linked to 'terrorism' and convened an emergency meeting of senior cabinet ministers. On X, formerly known as Twitter, he wrote: "I have just offered my sincere condolences to @SwedishPM following tonight’s harrowing attack on Swedish citizens in Brussels. As close partners the fight against terrorism is a joint one."
