Aaron Ramsdale urged to hand in Arsenal transfer request as brutal Mikel Arteta point made

Aaron Ramsdale has been told he should hand in an transfer request immediately after a challenging few months at Arsenal. The England international started the 2023/24 season as Mikel Arteta's No.1 before he was replaced in the starting XI by David Raya in September with just two Carabao Cup appearances to his name since then.

Having arrived on loan from Brentford in the summer, Raya began his Gunners career in impressive form with a number of clean sheets and a superb save in the North London Derby against Tottenham, however in that same game mistakes began to creep into his game. A flapping punch from Raya led directly to Son Heung-min scoring the equaliser with a number of errors leading to goals made in the last few weeks.

Ramsdale has also been provided with chances to prove himself to Arteta with a superb display against Brentford in the EFL Cup which included securing a clean sheet, however that was somewhat undone in the following round's defeat to West Ham.

The topic of the battle between Ramsdale and Raya has come to light again following the former's father Nick discussing the subject on Arsenal fan channel Highbury Squad earlier this week. Alongside this, comments from Ramsdale himself in the summer also resurfaced appearing to point to one of the reasons he was dropped in favour of Raya.

Now, Ramsdale has been sent a direct message by former Scotland international Steve Nicol with the defender revealing the rather extreme lengths he would go to if it was him in the shoes of Ramsdale. “It does look as though Ramsdale’s had enough and actually, this is all Arteta’s fault,” he said on the ESPN FC podcast. "The only way that Ramsdale was ever going to accept this was Raya being outstanding and then he can’t say anything.

“Arteta’s decided to go with Raya at the start of the season and the only way that Ramsdale can not have any problems is if Raya’s been outstanding, but the fact is he hasn’t been outstanding. If I’m Ramsdale I’ve got a transfer request in, absolutely ASAP.”

Ramsdale was linked with a transfer to Chelsea around the time Raya took his spot in the team, however those conversations have now gone quiet. Handing in a transfer request would also suggest a switch being made in the January transfer window, but it will likely be far better for Ramsdale if he assesses his options in the summer at the end of the current season.
