Arsenal's priority transfer target revealed as Ruben Neves interest rubbished

Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz is reportedly Arsenal's top target ahead of the January transfer window. The north London outfit spent heavily in the summer, splashing over £200million to recruit Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber, Declan Rice and David Raya.

Mikel Arteta's side have since enjoyed a fairly successful start to the 2023/24 campaign, currently sitting third in the Premier League standings, only one point behind league leaders Manchester City. That is even more impressive when you think that they have dealt with various injuries this term.

One of those players who is sidelined is holding midfielder Thomas Partey, who will miss the remainder of 2023 after undergoing a "procedure", football.london understands. That has resulted in the Gunners being linked with a plethora of midfielders ahead of the January window, including the likes of Villa's Luiz and Al Hilal's Ruben Neves, the former of which is the priority, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

Speaking about Arsenal's plans on his YouTube channel, Romano said: "The top target is Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa. There is nothing with Ruben Neves despite rumours.

"But for Douglas Luiz, from my understanding, it’s not an easy deal. Arsenal will try, Arsenal dream of him, but it’s not something concrete.

"So let’s see what’s going to happen because it’s not an easy negotiation with Aston Villa at all."
