Bukayo Saka reveals why Gabriel Martinelli has struggled for Arsenal this season

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka has lifted the lid on struggling against some defences in the first part of the 2023/24 campaign. The Hale End academy graduate has been facing double teams, and at times even triple teams, making him slightly less eye-catching this term.

However, the 22-year-old’s attacking output continues to be elite. Saka assisted Kai Havertz’s winner against Brentford on Saturday, the 15th direct goal contribution he has registered across all competitions this season.

Following the game against the Bees, the young winger opened up on his struggles against resolute defences in an honest interview with the Evening Standard, referencing the fact that Gabriel Martinelli has also been facing a similar issue. “I feel like a lot of games I’m facing a double team with two guys on me and it’s the same for Gabi (Martinelli),” the England international said.

“It’s happening in every game. I keep watching all my games back trying to find a solution, what I can do better. In the end I just feel like I need to understand that this is how it’s going to be this season and I just need to deal with it and keep finding a way like I did today.

“That’s what I need to keep doing.” The aforementioned Martinelli hasn’t been able to navigate his double teams just as much as Saka.

In fact, the former Ituano starlet has provided just five goals and assists this term, struggling to get involved in the final third as much as he managed last season. The young Brazilin was able to find provide 20 goals and assists in the Premier League alone across the 2022/23 campaign, something that is even more impressive when you consider that none of those came from the penalty spot.
