Chelsea handed fresh Levi Colwill injury update as England confirm double decision

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has withdrawn from the England squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.

The 20-year-old missed the Blues' Premier League thriller with Manchester City on Sunday afternoon due to a minor shoulder injury, understands. It was the first league game that Colwill missed this season after returning from his loan spell with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Colwill had been named in Gareth Southgate's final squad of 2023 in their double-header this month. However, his absence at Stamford Bridge sparked concerns over his availability for his nation.

On Monday, the official England social media account posted an image of the defender arriving at St George's Park with the rest of the squad. However, following reports that Colwill was due to leave the camp earlier in the day, the decision has now been confirmed by the FA.

The statement read: "Jude Bellingham and Levi Colwill will play no part in England’s forthcoming UEFA EURO 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.

The pair arrived at St. George’s Park for assessments on Monday but will now return to Real Madrid and Chelsea respectively to continue their rehabilitation."

Following the 4-4 draw with Man City, Pochettino admitted he was unsure how the central defender was. Chelsea will be hoping the young defender can shake off the issue ahead of next Saturday's Premier League visit to Newcastle United. Marc Cucurella filled in at left-back last time out but did concede a penalty in the first-half.
