Freddie Ljungberg delivers Premier League title prediction amid honest Arsenal admission

Arsenal legend Freddie Ljungberg has spoken about his former side's chances of winning the Premier League title this season. The Gunners currently sit on top of the table after title rivals Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur all dropped points over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta's side were able to secure all three points away to Brentford, with substitute Kai Havertz netting the only goal of the game in the 89th minute. That leaves the north Londoners one point clear at the top of the pile, ahead of City and Liverpool in second and third respectively.

Arsenal hero Ljungberg has claimed that he can see the Gunners challenging for the title this term, although he also admitted that Pep Guardiola and Co remain the favourites, having won each of the last three. "I think definitely ready to challenge for the title, but the stats here are quite telling to be honest and I don’t think it will work in their favour," the Swede told Sky Sports when asked about his old side's title chances.

"I think if you look against City which I think at Christmas you have to be almost 10 points ahead of them because they are so strong in the spring. I think they will be Manchester City’s closest challengers.

"But then, City are amazing. It’s hard."

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher echoed Ljungberg's sentiment on Arteta's chances of bringing the title to the Emirates Stadium come May. When asked if the Gunners were better equipped to win the title than last term, Carragher added: "I am not so sure.

"I don’t think they are much better defensively because you are talking about a team who are going from the third best defence to the best at the moment and could that little difference make a difference - of course. We are also talking about the team with the best attack, going to sixth and even one of their stats is 11th.

"I think if Arsenal continue who they are and this is the Arsenal we are going to see this season, I don’t think that they can win the league. So many games are going to the wire, and sometimes that can go against you.

"You look at the (Aaron) Ramsdale mistake, the big chance that Brentford had at the end of the second half. That can easily go against you.

"Everyone can see it with their eyes, it is not the same fluidity or at the same pace or energy creating chances - I don’t think it’s anything tactical, when I watch Arsenal I am still seeing the same things."
