A man is holding two children captive in his car on a runway at an airport in Germany, according to local reports.

Air traffic at Hamburg Airport has been brought to a halt while authorities deal with the situation. All access to the terminals have been blocked, with a large police presence on site.

According to Bild, the man's wife alerted police that her husband had taken their two children "captive" in the car and started heading for the airport.

The man is also said to be armed, having made several shots from his vehicle at the airport.

Hamburg Police tweeted to say there was a "major police operation" at the airport "with a large contingent of emergency services". They added: "We are currently assuming a static hostage situation."

The unknown man is said to have barricaded himself inside the vehicle, believed to be an Audi.

Police helicopters are circling the airport while armed police officers have entered Terminal 1 and evacuated people standing outside. Air traffic remains suspended as police deal with the hostage situation.

The car is said to have no numberplate and is currently parked in the business aviation terminal under a scheduled airliner on the runway.

Police are now in contact with the gunman. Thomas Gebert, a spokesman for the police, said the man threw two burning bottles from the car. The fire department sprayed the plane with water for safety.
