Ian Wright makes bold Chelsea target transfer prediction as Mauricio Pochettino sent wakeup call

Ian Wright believes that Aaron Ramsdale will consider leaving Arsenal in the January transfer window. The 25-year-old goalkeeper has been heavily linked with an exit from the Emirates Stadium recently after falling out of favour under Mikel Arteta.

After a disappointing start to the season, keeping just one clean sheet in the Gunners' first four Premier League games, David Raya replaced Ramsdale between the sticks. The England international was handed his first start in the English top-flight since September on Saturday night having been reduced to appearances in the Carabao Cup.

Ironically, Ramsdale may have only featured because Raya was ineligible to feature against Brentford – his parent club, which he joined Arsenal from in the summer on an initial loan. With the Englishman facing an uncertain future in north London, Stamford Bridge was mooted as a potential destination.

In fact, football.london understands that the Gunners have recently rejected an approach from a Premier League side in the bottom half of the table. Nevertheless, Wright has predicted Ramsdale to find a new club in January.

"There’s no way, as we speak, he’s not [weighing up his options]," said the former Arsenal striker on the Wrighty’s House podcast. "Even just because of that performance, because I watched Aaron Ramsdale last season, when he was playing regularly and, yeah, there were a couple of goalkeeping mistakes but nothing out of the ordinary.

"He’s got to be weighing up his options and that worries me. He has to be, he’s a number one goalkeeper. I can’t lie about it – I like David Raya, I love the fact that we’ve got two top goalkeepers, but it just feels a little bit unfair.

"He’s not done anything to get himself in a position like this, so it doesn’t feel right, it feels very ruthless. I just hope that something can work out, simply because I think he deserves better.

"I don’t want him to languish around our reserves, as a number two I should say, if Mikel has got plans on making David Raya our number one goalkeeper. I want him to go and be the top goalkeeper that I thought he was going to be for us."

According to the Daily Mail earlier this season, Ramsdale's future was being 'closely monitored' by Chelsea and Bayern Munich. However, Fabrizio Romano has since clarified that the shot-stopper is not on the Blues' shortlist and no negotiations have taken place. It's also said that there have been no talks at Chelsea to sign a new goalkeeper.
