Micky van de Ven Tottenham injury latest as Ange Postecoglou faces anxious wait

Tottenham Hotspur are yet to learn the severity of Micky van de Ven’s hamstring injury, according to reports.

Spurs were dealt a crushing blow on Monday when the Dutchman pulled up just before half-time. Van de Ven limped off the pitch and ultimately left the ground on crutches just minutes after James Maddison was also withdrawn.

The defender has been instrumental to Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham rebuild since arriving from Wolfsburg in the summer. His partnership with Cristian Romero has given Spurs a new-look defensive steel - but they will be without either this weekend as the Argentine was sent off in the 4-1 defeat to Chelsea.

While Romero is set to serve a three-match suspension, it remains unclear how long Van de Ven will remain sidelined. Reports suggest Tottenham are waiting for swelling on his hamstring to subside before undergoing a scan.

There have also been suggestions Postecoglou will enter the transfer market for a replacement in January - should the centre-back miss the majority of the campaign. Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly was a reported target in the summer and Spurs may renew their interest given Van de Ven’s situation.

The 25-year-old has been a mainstay of the Cherries' backline since joining from Bristol City in 2019. Should Tottenham move for the defender, they will likely face competition from Liverpool and Newcastle United.

Spurs face a selection conundrum in the heart of defence when they travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. As it stands, Eric Dier and youngster Ashley Phillips are the only first-team options available.
