Three things spotted in Chelsea training ahead of Brighton amid Christopher Nkunku injury update

Mauricio Pochettino was spotted putting his players through their paces in training ahead of Chelsea's clash against Brighton this weekend. The Argentine criticised his squad for a lack of energy and maturity following the 4-1 defeat against Newcastle last weekend.

Pochettino made it clear he wants his players to learn from what he described as the Blues' 'worst performance of the season' at St James' Park. Speaking after the loss, the Chelsea boss said: "We have certain levels that are required of us and it’s important we get back to those as soon as possible, and sometimes you need a situation like this to make you realise what it takes.

"We are a young, talented squad, but regardless you have to compete every time you step on the pitch. Those are the fundamentals and we have to learn from this."

Chelsea released five photos from training on Tuesday afternoon, so takes a look at three key points spotted from Cobham.

Christopher Nkunku update

Christopher Nkunku was spotted continuing his rehabilitation as he edges closer to a return to action. The Frenchman completed a £52million move to Stamford Bridge in the summer, but is yet to make a competitive appearance for the Blues.

The 26-year-old forward was dealt a blow to his knee during a pre-season clash against Borussia Dortmund in the United States and has been out of action ever since. Pochettino provided an update on Nkunku's recovery ahead of the trip to Tyneside last week: "It's difficult say [when Nkunku and Lavia will be back] because we need to assess them day by day.

"They are in a good condition. Nkunku a little ahead of Lavia. He was doing things with the group last week, still not fully recovered to be part of the squad."

There is hope that Nkunku may feature in the matchday squad against Brighton this weekend depending how he responds to training this week.

Running drills

Pochettino clearly had one thing in mind for his players when they reported for training on Tuesday afternoon. Cole Palmer, Raheem Sterling, Benoit Badiashile, Nicolas Jackson and Lesley Ugochukwu were pictured taking part in a running drill as they were put through their paces.

After the Chelsea boss slammed the energy shown by his squad against Newcastle, it's no surprise to see plenty of running happening in training.

Reece James and Marc Cucurella involved

Despite being suspended for the clash against Brighton this weekend, both Reece James and Marc Cucurella were pictured in training. The Chelsea captain received a red card for two bookable offences against the Magpies, whilst Cucurella picked up his fifth yellow card of the season so far - resulting in a one-match suspension.
