Anthony Martial 'to leave Man Utd' as club bosses take steps to axe striker

Anthony Martial is set to leave Manchester United, with the club not intending to renew his contract beyond its expiry next summer, according to reports. The French striker could depart as early as the January transfer window or on a free transfer at the end of the season.

United have the option to trigger a one-year extension in Martial's current contract, which would keep him at the club until 2025.

However, The Athletic report that he will be allowed to leave on a free transfer next summer if a suitable offer doesn't arrive in January.

Next month presents the final opportunity for United to secure a fee for Martial, who joined as the world's most expensive teenager in a £58million deal in 2015.

But, like David de Gea this summer, the 28-year-old's departure would free up significant space on the club's wage bill, paving the way for fresh attacking firepower.

Unlike De Gea, who was offered a new deal featuring a pay cut, United reportedly don't plan on handing Martial the chance to continue his career at Old Trafford.

Martial signed his current contract in 2019, but the five years that followed have prominently included speculation about his future.

Many thought his loan to Sevilla in the second half of last season signalled a certain exit in the summer transfer window.

But a lack of interest saw Martial survive in Erik ten Hag's squad, and he has started three of United's last five games.

He is yet to last the entirety of any of his 19 appearances this term, and many supporters have already lost patience with his lack of contribution.

Some sections of the disgruntled Old Trafford crowd cheered when Martial left the pitch for Rasmus Hojlund in the 56th minute of Saturday's 3-0 defeat to AFC Bournemouth.
