Enzo Fernandez was spotted crying on the pitch after Chelsea sealed a place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a penalty shoot-out victory over Newcastle on Tuesday evening. The Argentine midfielder was substituted off in the first half amid concerns that he was suffering from an illness.

Italian outlet Di Marzio claimed that an illness had hit Fernandez and Benoit Badiashile in the build-up to the match and the midfielder went directly down the tunnel when replaced by Mauricio Pochettino before half-time.

A member of the Blues' medical team accompanied Fernandez and Pochettino's assistant Jesus Perez when he left the pitch to be replaced by Armando Broja on the 32nd minute, hinting that he was nursing a problem. However, his mobility did not appear to be affected at the time.

He joined his team-mates on the pitch to celebrate their penalty shoot-out win, but the 22-year-old was in a more downbeat mood than his peers and trudged around while being consoled in worrying scenes for Chelsea.

Sky Sports claimed that Fernandez was also holding his thigh when speaking with Pochettino at half-time, prompting fears that he may be set for an extended period on the sidelines judging by his reaction at full-time.

Pochettino later confirmed to the broadcaster that Fernandez had felt sick during the match and asked to be substituted, while he confirmed that Levi Colwill, another casualty from the match, will be fit to face Wolves on Sunday.
