The German media are starting to point the finger at Harry Kane for Bayern Munich’s shortcomings this season, despite his impressive strike rate in front of goal. The England international joined the Bundesliga outfit over the summer to finally get his hands on some silverware, though he could be forced to wait at least another season to lift a trophy.
Kane asserted himself as one of the very best strikers to grace the Premier League during his time with Tottenham, leaving the club with 213 league goals to his name – the second-most in history. However, the lure of lifting the Bundesliga title proved decisive and he decided to join Bayern in a deal worth £82million over the summer.
The 30-year-old has hit the ground running in Germany, scoring 22 league goals in 17 appearances to put himself on course for a record-breaking campaign. Kane has led the line superbly for Thomas Tuchel’s side, but his efforts do not look likely to be rewarded.
Bayern are currently in second place in the Bundesliga and seven points behind Bayern Leverkusen, who are yet to taste defeat this season. Xabi Alonso’s team are showing no signs of slowing, recently coming from behind twice to secure a 3-2 win over RB Leipzig.
Tuchel’s side were also knocked out of the DFB Pokal by third-division side Saarbrucken, with the incredibly competitive Champions League now appearing to be Bayern’s most likely route to a trophy this season. As a result, the ‘curse of Kane’ has become a key talking point in the German media.
BILD recently published a piece branded ‘Bayern and the sinister curse of Harry Kane’ which addressed the unlucky aura that has followed the striker throughout his career so far. They claim it is ‘hard to believe’ that a player worth 100 million (£82m) ‘has never won a title in his life’ and ‘never held a trophy or a bowl, nothing shiny, nothing for the trophy cabinet’.
