Mohamed Salah has started his Africa Cup of Nations tournament with one of the luckiest assists he is ever likely to register. The Egypt international attempted to fire his side in front against Mozambique but mistimed his strike, allowing the ball to drop to Mostafa Mohamed to smash home.

Salah has made it no secret that winning AFCON is his next personal target as a player, having led his nation to the final twice but having to settle for runners-up on both occasions. The Liverpool winger will be hoping to right those wrongs this year, and his side have kicked off the tournament in fine style.

In the opening match of Group B, Egypt took the lead after just three minutes against Mozambique, with FC Nantes striker Mohamed receiving the ball inside the area and smashing a fierce strike into the far corner whilst on the turn to send his nation’s travelling supporters wild.

Salah also played a key but fortunate role in the goal in what could be one of the luckiest moments in his international career. Following a cross from the left wing, the ex-Roma star actually attempted to smash a half-volley towards goal in the build-up to Mohamed’s goal.

However, Salah mistimed his shot and the ball fumbled between his legs and into the path of his teammate, who made no mistake from close range. The Liverpool star will certainly be relieved that Mohamed was able to make amends for his error, though he will also be hoping to make an impact of his own.

Salah has scored 48 goals in 66 appearances for Egypt and written himself into his nation’s history books, though AFCON success would only amplify his reputation.
