Man Utd set out bold 'northern Wembley' plan as Ratcliffe teases full Old Trafford rebuild

It is estimated that 25 per-cent of the land which Old Trafford occupies lies empty or is ‘wasted’. Insiders reportedly harbour concerns about simply expanding stands because, as one source quoted in the report puts it, “Ultimately you have still got a 1910 building”.

Building an entirely new stadium on the land is viewed as the most cost-effective way of creating a new home for United. Expanding the current stadium is reportedly to likely cost a whopping £800m, such are the state of the facilities.

Knocking down Old Trafford and rebuilding on the current site would reportedly cost around £1.5billion, but it would give United a modern arena that rivals the likes of Wembley, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the Emirates Stadium. It is claimed that Ratcliffe could even make a claim for government funding as part of the ‘Levelling Up’ pledges.
