Man Utd icon Rio Ferdinand questions Gareth Southgate as he digs out old Phil Foden quote

Southgate’s midfield conundrum is already becoming a major talking point heading into the Euros. Jude Bellingham has found another level whilst playing in a more attacking midfield role for Real Madrid, prompting conversations about whether he would be wasted alongside Declan Rice as an 8.

Similarly, with Kalvin Phillips and Jordan Henderson both struggling, questions have been raised about whether England have enough balance centrally if Bellingham is tasked with playing behind a No. 10.

However, Ferdinand does not believe that a trio of Rice, Bellingham and Foden would be an issue for the Three Lions, though he is unsure why Southgate has not trialled the set-up given that he has finally been given justification to play the latter in midfield rather than on the left.

Speaking on the Vibe with FIVE YouTube channel after England’s defeat to Brazil on Saturday, the ex-United captain explained: “Gareth Southgate said once that he isn’t playing central for his club so he can’t pick him. But he’s played central for his club this season and been arguably one of the best players in the league.

“Foden, in the central areas, for the best team in Europe, this season, has been playing centrally and been the guy they’ve looked to for inspirational moments to get them results and unlock things. And I’m sitting there thinking… I like Conor Gallagher, I think he’s got a place in that squad right now, but I think that Phil Foden – just on performance only, forget about what you think of him as a talent – why’s he not playing in there?
