Alan Shearer set to sign new Match of The Day contract - hinting fellow pundit Gary Lineker could also stay on BBC programme

Former England striker Alan Shearer is set to sign a new Match of The Day contract – giving the biggest hint yet that Gary Lineker will also stay on the programme.

The Mail on Sunday can reveal that Shearer is in the process of 'ironing things out' but is expected to agree terms to return after his current deal expires after this season.

Talks began earlier this month for him to return to his £400,000 a year role as a pundit, though it is understood that BBC chiefs are keen to sign presenters on only one-year contracts.

There has been speculation over the future of Lineker, 63, especially after a leaked email from the BBC's head of sport Alex Kay-Jelski suggested the host was leaving the show after 25 years.

But one source said both stars 'basically come as a pair', hinting that Shearer, 54, signs knowing Lineker will stay.

Lineker told his Rest is Football podcast this week that he is still delighted to be hosting Match of the Day, despite the rumours.

'Working with the BBC is wonderful, and it is a privilege, and it has been for an awfully long time. And I love the show', he told Alan Shearer and Micah Richards.

But insiders had told MailOnline the intense speculation regarding Lineker's position has caused ripples within the Corporation,

Some staff members say they have no idea whether the ex-England captain is staying put or not, which has become 'increasingly unsettling' for those working on the iconic football show.
