M25 closed: Traffic halted as terrifying images show huge lorry fire by services

The M25 is closed in both directions as terrifying images show a massive HGV fire that has erupted into a fireball and sparked a major emergency services response.

A massive emergency response from Kent Fire and Rescue Service, London Fire Brigade, and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service is seing dozens of firefighters battle the blaze as flames and smoke fill the night sky at Clacket Lane services.

It broke out just after 10pm tonight and has led to the closure of the London-bound carriageway as the 18-wheeler is decimated by flames. It has also closed the M26 westbound.

A spokesperson for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said: “The lorry was well alight upon arrival, and crews are using various firefighting methods in an attempt to extinguish the fire.”

Both sides of the M25 remain shut and the road is likely to remain closed for quite some time.

National Highways said: "The M25 in Surrey/ Kent is closed in both directions between J5 near Sevenoaks and J6 near Godstone /Caterham due to a serious heavy goods vehicle fire. This has also closed the M26 westbound between J2A near Wrotham Heath and M25/A21.

A Surrey Police statement said: "The road is closed in both directions between junctions 5-6, and is likely to be impacted for some time.

"Please avoid the area and seek an alternative route. We will bring you further updates as they become available."
