The M5 in Somerset was closed on Tuesday, October 8, southbound between J25 near Taunton and J26 near Wellington due to flooding sparked by heavy rainfall.
National Highways set a diversion route in place, with road users being advised to follow the solid square diversion symbol on road signs.
Traffic, the organisation said, was diverted via the A38, A378, A303 and A30 to rejoin the M5 at J29.
The road was reopened southbound to traffic at around 5pm - but lane 3 "remains closed in both directions due to barrier damage following an earlier collision", with repair works due to take place overnight, National Highways said.
