BBC Breakfast halted for devastating 'breaking news' as viewers left furious
BBC Breakfast viewers shared their anger as Ben Boulos halted the show to announce the new energy price cap for gas and electricity, which is going up by £111 from April meaning the average annual bill will increase to £1,849 - up by 6.4%.
Taking to X they raged about the increase. "What happened to the shout from the govt we will get more money in people's pockets - I am still waiting," one fumed.
"Again, the people of the UK are being shafted. We have some of the highest energy prices in the world and it keeps increasing. What are the @labour Gov doing about it? Nothing. No one ever does and we just put up with it. @ofgem is not fit for purpose," another commented.
"It's strange, the uk that was less reliant on Russian gas and oil somehow got bills 3 times higher than Germany and France when russian invaded the Ukraine. How long are the British people going to take the consortium of greed and incompetence. Enough is enough," a third chimed in.
A fourth advised: "Deregulation was the aim of the Brexit game! Shred regulations so that companies are free to charge what they like to make insane profits! This will never end until the people end it. Stop paying these vultures….pay the minimum….they can’t cut you off if you’re paying!"
A fifth sarcastically added: "Well done Labour. Crazy Ed told us they were going to reduce bills by £300. They have zero idea what they are doing," and they included applause emjois in their comment.
Meanwhile a sixth opined: "The UKs energy and water regulators do appear to side with the private companies far to often over the needs of customers.
"In my opinion those relationships need to change to protect customers affordability not protect profits and dividends Toothless regulation in my opinion."
Between 1 April and 30 June 2025, the energy price cap will be set at £1,849 per year for a typical household who use electricity and gas and pay by Direct Debit.
This is an increase of 6.4% compared to the cap set between 1 January to 31 March 2025 (£1,738) and means bills will rise by an average of £111 a year.
The price cap is based on typical household energy use.
This rise means the average household is paying £750 more per year for their energy compared to winter 2020/21 - a hike of 77%, according to the End Fuel Poverty Coalition.
The cost of every unit of gas used will surge by over 10%, meaning the cost of gas is now double what it was in winter 2020/21.
