Lawns will grow ‘healthier, greener and thicker’ if gardener’s 3 vital tasks are done now

Spring not only brings a welcome change in weather, but also offers the perfect opportunity to take care of your lawn. A well-maintained lawn is not just a visual delight; it provides a relaxing sanctuary and adds to the overall beauty of your garden. Before the season of growth begins, it is crucial for setting the foundation for a healthy lawn.

To help with doing so, gardening expert at Mr Fothergill's Seeds, Rachel Cole, has shared three simple tasks to crack on with this month to guarantee a thriving lawn for spring and summer. She said: “Now is the perfect time to prepare your lawn to look lush and green this spring and summer.

“After winter, grass can look tired and patchy, but with a few simple steps, you can improve the appearance of your grass and create the perfect outdoor space.”

One of the first things Rachel recommends doing is removing weeds and moss. Rachel said: “Start by raking up weeds and moss that may have built up over the colder winter months.

“Removing weeds and moss is crucial as it allows air, sunlight, and moisture to get to the soil.”

A thorough rake will also help break up the soil, allowing more oxygen and nutrients to sink in.

Tackling weeds at this time can prevent them from taking over later in the year. Applying an effective weed treatment in March or April will help to keep unwanted plants at bay. Look for products suited to your lawn type for the best results.

The next task is to mow your lawn but at the right height. When it comes to the first mow of the season, “don’t cut it too short”, urged the expert.

Keeping the lawnmower blades high will reduce stress on the grass and encourage the roots to grow more.

Then, slowly reduce the grass height over the course of the next few weeks. Rachel claimed: “Doing that will mean a healthier, greener and thicker lawn.”

To give your lawn an added boost of nutrients, the gardener recommends applying lawn feed in early spring. Lawn feed promotes “thicker growth, helps repair any winter damage, and gives the rich green colour” we all love to see in our gardens.
