I bought a regular bottle of water in a London corner shop - and was charged £800

Proper news from Britain - News from Britain you won’t find anywhere else. Not the tosh the big media force-feed you every day!

A man was left shocked after finding out he had been charged more than £800 for a bottle of water in south London corner shop.

Samuel Ompreon, 24, had popped into the store in Kennington with a friend to get a drink.

But after paying for the regular one litre bottle of Evian, his friend was quickly stopped in his tracks after seeing a banking notification pop up on his phone.

The notification showed he had been charged an eye-watering £801.70 for the drink.

After the initial shock, the two friends went back in to the corner shop to get to the bottom of the transaction.

However, Sam's friend was told it would take 'one to three working days' to be refunded, and he's still waiting to get his money back.

Samuel recorded the bizarre episode and his video quickly went viral and garnered thousands of views.

The content creator and football coach based in Kennington, said: 'It was a bit crazy when we first noticed.

'We realised what had happened pretty quickly and knew it was just an accident. So, to be fair, it was pretty funny.'

'Obviously, it wasn't so funny that the money actually got taken.

'But we knew it wasn't malicious and that they'd be OK to give it back.'

He added: 'That's always been my worst fear!'

However, his friend was not best pleased when he was told he'd need to wait one to three working days for it to be returned, due to the Bank Holiday. As of yet, he is still waiting to be refunded.

It's not the first time people have been charged huge sums over a relatively small purchase.

One woman who was charged over £500 for two orange peppers in her ASDA online food shop was left overdrawn and incurring bank charges.

Kate Jones, from Worcester, was initially charged £92 for her food shop delivery which she received last Tuesday.

After the initial shock, the two friends went back in to the corner shop to get to the bottom of the transaction, questioning the cashier about the £801.70 charge

But when she looked at her bank balance two days later, she noticed an extra charge had been added, bringing the total up to £626 for the shop.

She had been charged £533.36 for two orange peppers which should cost 59p each.

Kate , who is a wheelchair user, said shopping online is an 'absolute lifeline' for her as she cannot carry lots of bags.

She reached out to ASDA who agreed to refund Kate and claimed a 'technical error' was responsible for the inflated cost of the peppers.

Kate said she was promised she would be refunded in 24hours and was offered a £50 gift voucher but it took a whole week for her to receive her money back.
