Period drama lovers have been raving about a television miniseries which has been hailed the “best adaptation ever. Inspired by the book by Alexandre Dumas of the same name, The Count of Monte Cristo is set in the 18th century and follows Edmond Dantes (played by Hollywood favourite Sam Claflin), a young sailor falsely accused of treason. The French sailor is imprisoned without trial in the Château d’If, a gloomy island fortress off the coast of Marseille.
During years of imprisonment, a fellow prisoner, a scholarly abbot, educates Edmond in multiple subjects. Before dying, the abbot reveals where a vast treasure is hidden on a deserted island.
Energised with determination and grief, the young sailor escapes and discovers the treasure where he assumes the identity of the Count of Monte Cristo where he uses his wealth to enact revenge against his betrayers.
The epic historical adventure drama which is now available to stream on UKTV sees Sam Claflin share the screen alongside Jeremy Irons, Blake Ritson, Karla-Simone Spence, Poppy Corby Tuech, ana Girardot, and Gabriella Pession.
Dumas’s novel became a best-seller following it release in 1845 and is now regarded as his most successful work. The Count of Monte Cristo has sold a staggering 500million copies worldwide and has been translated into nearly 100 languages.
Both the series and the blook have been widely praised online, with one writing: “This is sooo good, surely the best adaptation ever done, but there’s just way too much in the book to cover even in 8 hour-long episodes. Still good though.”
Also lauding the show, a third added: “I loved it and Sam Claflin as Edmond was part of the reason why. I’ve read so many versions of the book and seen more than a few dramatisations. This is probably my favourite.”
Showering the actor with praise, another penned: “Sam Claflin really made this series. His acting is top-notch, and I believe in his Dantes every second. I had never been a fan of the story and Sam before, but this series changed my mind. I’ve already watched about five more adaptations, and this one is the best for my taste.”
Despite the series receiving glittering reviews, it came under fire for making significant changes in character portrayals, storyline and other overall details. This included the absence of several characters from the TV adaptation.
Although there were notable differences, this didn’t change their admiration for the series as one commented: “I saw this a few weeks ago and I absolutely loved it! It’s really close to the book, but there are still a few things missing I really wish were in it.”
