Before even setting foot inside, Homes Under The Hammer presenter Jacqui Joseph encountered a significant problem that could have put off potential buyers.

In the opening sequence of the repeat episode broadcast on Monday, August 4, Jacqui explored the coastal town of Hunstanton, famed for its stunning beaches on Norfolk's north-west shoreline. She informed viewers that the seafront was merely a stone's throw away from the semi-detached Victorian four-bedroom house she was featuring on the programme.

Initially impressed by the property's "grand" facade, Jacqui noted that it had an auction guide price of £200,000 plus. Jacqui lavished praise on the home's exterior, admiring the Victorian features, off-road parking, and the impressive stature of the red-brick building, eagerly anticipating what lay inside.

Stepping through the threshold, she observed the brickwork at the bottom of the white PVC door and remarked, "Oh, that's not a good sign. You've got some dry rot there, but that could be because of the step outside," reports Norfolk Live.

Her journey through the hallway revealed the problem was more extensive than initially thought. Entering the front room, Jacqui was taken aback, exclaiming, "Oh, wow, there are no floors.

"I'm not sure what has happened here, but obviously the floors had to be removed for a reason. " Offering her assessment, she explained: "It could have been due to some serious damp, it could have just been rotten floorboards, it could be woodworm."

She went on to point out: "But also the plaster has been taken off the walls here."

Following a more thorough examination of the premises, Jacqui concluded, "There was obviously some serious damp here."

Despite facing considerable challenges ahead, Jane secured the property through an online auction, claiming the winning bid of £232,000 for what marked her maiden auction acquisition.

Jane acknowledged that initially, she, her husband, and her son had assumed the property would require far less work than what eventually materialised.

The family who acquired the semi-detached dwelling had no intention of selling or letting the property; rather, they envisioned using the Victorian residence as their holiday retreat.

Featured on the show with local contractor Ben, they confirmed Jacqui's theories, revealing that the home had suffered moisture damage due to external rendering that had deteriorated over the years.

They also discovered insufficient ventilation under the floorboards, which represented another expensive and time-consuming problem that required immediate attention.

With Ben's assistance, Jane found herself needing to completely renovate the entire property rather than simply fitting a new kitchen and bathroom and applying fresh paint. Fresh flooring, new skirting boards, freshly plastered walls, exterior rendering, complete electrical rewiring, updated radiators, and a replacement boiler.

Jane had allocated £50,000 for the entire project, but owing to several significant complications, she revealed, "The budget was significantly exceeded. We were about £20,000 over, and there is a bit more to pay for yet."

She continued: "I guess we're going to end up about £30,000 over budget."

Homes Under The Hammer airs weekdays from 11:15am on BBC One and can be streamed via BBC iPlayer.
