Gianluigi Donnarumma has penned an emotional exit message, as the Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper's departure edges closer. The 26-year-old was instrumental in the Ligue 1 outfit's recent Champions League win, but is set to move on this summer.

Donnarumma's contract is due to expire at the end of next season, with the Italian having been locked in talks with PSG over a new deal. However, on the eve of the new season starting, there are reports that negotiations have broken down and PSG are looking to cash in instead.

In a social media statement, the shot-stopper hinted that the decision was taken out of his control and is dissapointed that he's being forced to move on. He said: "To the special Paris fans, from the first day I arrived, I gave everything – on and off the pitch – to earn my place and defend the goal of Paris Saint-Germain. Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team’s success. I am disappointed and disheartened.

"I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done. If that doesn’t happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me, and I will never forget it. I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights, and of you, who made me feel at home."

He concluded with: "To my teammates – my second family – thank you for every battle, every laugh, every moment we shared. You will always be my brothers. Playing for this club and living in this city has been an immense honour. Thank you, Paris."

The situation developed ahead of this week's UEFA Super Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur when Donnarumma was left out of the PSG matchday squad. During his pre-match media duties, Enrique spoke about the decision, explaining it was "100 per cent" his own choice.

Speaking ahead of the Super Cup, manager Luis Enrique said: “Donnarumma is out of the squad as it’s my own decision. I am 100 per cent responsible. I want a different kind of goalkeeper and I made this decision. Gigio is one of the best GKs in the whole world."

Enrique added: “The life of a top-level footballer, and the same goes for us coaches, is this: it wasn’t an easy decision but I take full responsibility for it. On the other hand, if these choices were easy, anyone could make them.”

Manchester United and rivals Manchester City have been mentioned as potential suitors, with Donnarumma said to be keen on a move to the Premier League. Ruben Amorim has been said to want an upgrade in the goalkeeper department, while City could target Donnarumma as a potential Ederson replacement, with the Brazil international reportedly in talks with Galatasaray.
