Homes Under the Hammer: Dion stumbles across staircase in a bungalow

Homes Under the Hammer took an unexpected twist when presenter Dion Dublin travelled to Greater Manchester to examine a "gem" property in the market town of Ramsbottom.

During the repeat BBC episode broadcast on Wednesday (August 27), Dion hadn't even stepped foot inside the three-bedroom property before he discovered a rare "bonus" feature. Thrilled about the location and its countryside appeal, Dion highlighted a wooded area situated directly across from the house he was preparing to inspect.

Addressing the camera, he remarked: "The property I am about to see has that woodland across the road," gesturing to demonstrate it was merely a stone's throw away.

Dion continued: "Now that is a bonus, walks on tap, let me tell you."

Though he became smitten with the semi-detached property himself, Dion observed that it wasn't without some significant and expensive defects as he identified a "sloping feeling" upon entering the front room, reports the Manchester Evening News.

"Feels like I'm going uphill, maybe the house has a bit of subsidence, they'll want to look into that," he said.

The dwelling also suffered from a substantial leak in the entrance hallway requiring attention, indicating the new proprietors would face considerable renovation challenges.

Civil engineer Rory secured the winning offer of £175,000 at a remote auction and had already recognised the house presented some major problems to resolve.

Dion enquired whether he was aware of the subsidence concerns. Rory acknowledged that he'd already noticed the uneven floors and fractures at the property's front but remained undeterred. The engineer had initially planned to underpin the house, but soon discovered that this had already been done, though there were still significant costs to cover.

He installed new flooring, a brand-new kitchen extension, an en-suite for the master bedroom, relocated the front door, fully insulated the entire house - both walls and floors - and didn't skimp on the interior and luxurious furnishings.

The engineer had projected a six-month timeline for the work with a comfortable budget of £125,000. Thanks to the diligent efforts of his construction team, led by Andrew, the project was completed a month early, although Rory's budget had been completely "caned".

"I've absolutely caned my budget, I'd hoped to spend around £125,000 but it eventually came in at about £145,000," the property owner explained. Rory further clarified that £2000 of his budget was spent on sandwiches for his staff each day.

He told Dion that it was "money well spent' because it meant they could grab a sarnie and crack on instead of venturing off for lunch each day and wasting precious time.

In spite of the whopping outlay, Rory was still expected to make a hefty £80,000 on the resale of the property. He'd spent a grand total of £320,000 on everything but a local estate agent now valued the property at £400,000.

Rory was happy with the valuation and said he had no desire to rent it out, commenting that it allowed them to grab a sandwich and get back to work instead of taking time out for lunch each day.

Despite the substantial expenditure, Rory was still expected to make a hefty profit of £80,000 from the property resale. He had spent a total of £320,000 on everything, but a local estate agent now valued the property at £400,000.

Rory expressed satisfaction with the valuation and stated he had no intention of renting it out, remarking: "I really like this house, I've quite enjoyed it and I don't want to see the back of it.

"I'll be a little bit sad maybe to see it go but I think i'll be more happy to see the smile it puts on the person's face who eventually buys it because they'll have got a real gem of a house right here."

Homes Under the Hammer airs every day on BBC One, from 11:15am.
