NatWest and Halifax will close the doors on 39 of its banks next month in another blow to UK high streets. Hundreds of bank branches have already closed this year, and there are more in the pipeline in the coming months.
A total of 26 NatWest branches and 13 Halifax branches will be closed for good in September. The closures will extend into October, too, as banks are forced to deal with the customer turn towards online and mobile banking. Banks and building societies have closed a staggering total of 6,443 branches since the start of 2015, equating to 53 closures every month on average, according to consumer champion Which?. Which? deputy editor Sam Richardson said that the closures represent a "seismic shift" in how British people are choosing to bank.
NatWest is just one of the major banks that will close many of its sites throughout the UK.
According to the Metro, a NatWest spokesperson said that more than 80% of its current account holders use digital services, and more than 97% of retail accounts have been opened online.
A total of 54 branches will close their shutters this year, and since 2015, the NatWest Group, which also includes Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank, has shut 1,409 branches.

Halifax has previously reported a 48% drop in face-to-face transactions at its branches in the past five years.
Speaking on this at the time, a spokesperson for Halifax said: "Most customers are now using our mobile banking app, internet banking or calling us instead. This means they are using branches less."
Halifax has closed a huge number of its branches in an effort to cut costs.
