George and Mildred star Norman Eshley has died at the age of 80. The actor was living with cancer, and sadly died on Saturday, August 2 at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. His wife Rachel was by his side, his agent Thomas Bowington has confirmed to PA.
He said: "It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of our client actor Norman Eshley. A warm, kind and grounded man with a great voice that I will miss not hearing over the phone again.” His wife Rachel added: “Although our time together wasn’t long enough I will be forever grateful for the wonderful times we shared. He was my husband and best friend and my heart will always be with him.”
Born in 1945, Norman began his career in Shakespeare, before landing his inaugural film role in Orson Welles’ 1968 release The Immortal Story.
The comedy star's life was an eventful one. In 1993, the star was a passenger in a car when it crashed in the Dordogne, France, sustaining multiple injuries in the collision including head trauma.
The car had been travelling along a narrow country road when it hit a lorry.
He suffered a punctured lung, cracked sternum and a broken shoulder blade in the crash, as well as an arm fracture. He said at the time: “I was lucky to survive.”
The Jeffrey Fourmile actor, however, admitted he sometimes struggled to find screen work, admitting: “Unless it's a series, you can't live on just television. I've always needed to go out and work for the RSC and things like that. I suddenly realised that I was not going to work in the theatre any more, and I think I'd also lost my bottle a bit. I tried a play in Nottingham, and I couldn't remember a line."
