At the time of her birth in August 1950, Buckingham Palace was undergoing renovations following damage it had sustained from the Second World War. In 1949, the family had moved to Clarence House. For this reason, Anne was born at Clarence House rather than Buckingham Palace. After the birth, Prince Philip reportedly told everyone: "It's the sweetest girl."

Whilst Prince Andrew is said to have been the late Queen's favourite child, Anne has often been dubbed as Philip's favourite among their four children. Eileen Parker, wife of Philip's close friend Mike Parker, previously revealed via Daily Mail: "[Philip] always had more fun with Anne.
