Wetherspoon chief executive Sir Tim Martin has brought back a menu item following a complaint from a customer who wrote to express his dismay at its removal. Wetherspoon enthusiast Adam Gale was devastated when he found that his local establishment, the Rodboro Buildings in Guildford, Surrey, had removed tuna jacket potato from its offerings.

Other fillings, such as beans and cheese, remained on offer, he observed in correspondence sent directly to Sir Tim Martin. Wetherspoon prices do vary, but at the Rodboro Buildings, a jacket potato with a side salad and one filling costs £7.73 with a soft drink, or £9.26 with an alcoholic beverage.

Mr Gale, from Cranleigh, wrote: "I love visiting Wetherspoons pubs across the country. Yet I am disappointed to see, at my local Wetherspoon in Guildford - The Rodboro Buildings - that the tuna filling is no longer available for the wonderful jacket potato menu option," reports The Mirror.

"Your other filling options, such as cheese and baked beans, are lovely. But the tuna one was so nice. Can we please have the tuna filling back on the Guildford menu?".

Responding to the correspondence, Mr Martin replied: "For several decades, I was a tuna-and-jacket-potato guy. But I switched to a chicken wrap and salad for lunch a few years back. So, I hadn't noticed that the tuna had vamoosed.

"No sooner is my back turned. Seriously, though, as we speak, tuna has been reinstated. Your wish is my command, as they say."

Following recent news by Mr Martin that Wetherspoon will not be hiking the prices of food and drink in the coming months, despite a 30p increase on some drinks and meal deals back in January, the pub chain is set to maintain its current pricing structure.

Speaking to The Sun, Sir Tim stated: "We intend to hold prices at least for the summer and autumn."

Pubs and restaurants are subject to a standard VAT rate of 20% on food and drink, while supermarkets pay no VAT on similar items. Sir Tim argued: "Pubs must have tax equality with supermarkets."

In addition to this, Wetherspoon has announced plans to open 30 new pubs over the next year, creating approximately 1,800 jobs. Half of these new establishments will be directly managed by Wetherspoons, with the remainder run by franchisees.

Among the locations for the 15 directly-run pubs are Edinburgh Old Town, Farnham in Surrey, Basildon in Essex, Manchester and Heathrow Airports, London Bridge and Paddington in London, and Glasgow.

Currently, Wetherspoon operates 794 pubs, having opened three in the past year and sold nine. This is a decrease from the 955 sites it had in 2015.
