The Repair Shop veterans Julie Tatchell and Amanda Middleditch work as a team to restore visitors’ beloved toys but are the specialists related?

BBC’s The Repair Shop is dedicated to helping guests breathe new life into their precious belongings and the show truly wouldn’t be the same without its team of experts.

Among them are the “Teddy Bear Ladies” Julie Tatchell and Amanda Middleditch who specialise in restoring childhood bears and other soft toys.

With the pair working so closely together, many fans have wondered if there is a familial connection between Julie and Amanda.

While they truly do share a close bond, the teddy bear ladies are not related but have been close friends and colleagues for at least the past 15 years.

The pair started working together in 2006 as they shared a passion for encouraging people to take up sewing.

They later tied this in with restoring teddy bears and soft ties by hosting workshops with children and their parents at creative birthday parties.

Julie and Amanda then decided to focus on teddy bear restoring full time, thus the creation of their business Bear It In Mind as it’s known today in New Forest.

It was in 2017 that they joined The Repair Shop in the hope that it would further encourage people to pick up a sewing needle.

They shared on the Bear It In Mind website: “There may even be a new generation of repairers developing as we speak, together with growing interest in the history and stories behind the once flourishing manufacture of soft toys in Britain.”

Bear It In Mind sadly no longer takes on new restoration projects though as they decided it was time to focus more on working as ambassadors promoting the craft.

As well as their social media presence, Julie and Amanda host their podcast Bearly Begun and last year released their children’s book Bartie Bristle.

The book revolves around a quaint teddy bear shop and follows the adventures of Bartie and his furry friends.

The Repair Shop is available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
