William Saliba is set to commit his future to Arsenal by signing a new long-term contract, despite interest from Real Madrid. The centre-back has established himself as one of Europe's top defenders and was on the radar of the Spanish giants, but he will now ink a fresh deal at the Emirates.

Contract negotiations began in May as the Gunners sought to secure their defensive linchpin, who has been instrumental in their ascent under Mikel Arteta. Having originally joined Arsenal in 2019, Saliba enjoyed three loan spells in France before being integrated into the Arsenal first-team three years ago.

Saliba had quelled doubts surrounding his future earlier this year by stating he was happy at Arsenal, amid growing interest from the record European champions. He stated he was keen to win silverware at the Emirates Stadium and didn't have any intentions to move on just yet.

Real Madrid have a track record of snapping up players when their contracts are nearing an end - with Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe and Trent Alexander-Arnold being prime examples - and were monitoring Saliba's situation. However, the Frenchman has always expressed his contentment in London and is ready to demonstrate that commitment.

Last season, Saliba made 51 appearances for Arsenal as they secured second place in the Premier League for the third year running and advanced to the semi-finals of the Champions League. The centre-back was frank and honest when quizzed on his desire to put pen to paper in March, saying: “Yes, hopefully. Of course there is nothing now but there is a good conversation with my agent and the club. Let’s see.”

When the extension is formally completed, Saliba will become the latest in a long line of key Arsenal players to commit their long-term future to the club. Centre-back partner Gabriel signed fresh terms in the summer, whereas Ethan Nwaneri, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Leandro Trossard have all signed new deals in recent months.

It's no surprise Saliba is keen to stick around in north London, given the Frenchman has struck up a solid relationship with Arteta. Praising the work of the Spanish coach, Saliba told L'Equipe last year: "He taught me to have a good attitude.

"Sometimes he thought I was a little soft in training so he asked me to be meaner. In fact, he wants the players to be scared when he sees me.‘He took me to another level. He is one of the best coaches in the world. He looks at all the details and hates defeat. We work on each match differently."
